The Best Eyeliner Guide To Achieve Today’s Hottest Trends
The Gilbert Guide (trademark/copyright pending) is a capture, a curation, and a collection of the products, places, and experiences in my professional life. Around the world, in the depths of Los Angeles, and via visits, meetings, and explorations, I choose to share the best, the most interesting, and the highly relevant with my community, my fans, and my readers. We’re kicking off late summer with the truth about eyeliner. May you feel guided and excited. – Gilbert
During these warm summer months, the last thing you want is an eyeliner that slips and slides. With all the eyeliner trends we see popping up, having an eyeliner that glides on with ease and stays put is crucial to having your eyes looking gorgeous. Whether trying to execute a classic cat eye, or going all out with a cut crease, here are my favorite attributes when it comes to selecting an eyeliner:
Look for a pencil with staying power.
– Modern formulas, like gel eye crayons, apply seamlessly and allow enough play time to blend. Once set, the waterproof formula ensures it stays put (and it’s also great for those with oily lids).
– Kohl or Kajal are great for quick smoky eyes or rimming the inner waterline. These crayons tend to be made of a softer formula and provide a fast and seamless application. Once on, you can blend or smudge, and these also double as a great eyeshadow base.
– For more durability, apply an eyeshadow on top of the applied pencil; this will help to prevent the liner from moving around and make any eyeshadow bolder.
– Haus Labs by Lady Gaga makes an amazing waterproof eyeliner in a beautiful matte green. Swap out your black for a fun pop of color like Grime, and apply it from inner to outer corner extending it outwards. Balance the eye out by smudging a taupe-ish brown to the lower lash line.
Choose – and use – complementary colors.
– One of the hottest trends right now is the reverse cat eye. Seen all over TikTok and YouTube, it’s proven to be one of the seasons stand out looks. Instead of lining the upper lash line, focus your lining detail along the lower lash line.
– Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on waterproof pencil in Perversion is one of the blackest blacks. The trick is to blend an eyeshadow in a similar color on top and to create an elongated blurred effect at the inner and outer corners. Keep the lid neutral and finish with your favorite mascara.
Embrace the smoky eyes.
– I’ve found you can create a smoldering look with just a few products and steps. Shiseido’s Kajal Ink Artist Shadow pencil in Plum Blossom is a jumbo eye crayon that is extremely versatile: it acts as a liner, kajal, shadow, and brow color that creates a striking look with bold 12 hr. wear.
– Start by layering color from lash line to crease, then sweep it along the entire lower lash line. Using the built-in sponge, blend the edges to create a smoky finish and voilà!
With all the options out there, the one thing to consider is the overall style or look you’re trying to achieve. This will help guide you to the eyeliner you should be reaching for. Having multiple options will make the process easier, and understanding how the formula works both assist in the application process. xoxo The Gilbert Guide
